Around 12 lakh families in the twin cities of Vasai and Virar will get piped gas by January 2019 thanks to the Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL) which bagged the contract to provide the piped gas to the households in the twin cities. The foundation stone for laying the pipeline was done on Tuesday at the hands of Pravina Thakur, Mayor, Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC). 

    The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) have given the clearance for the PNG (piped natural gas) connections in Vasai, Virar, Palghar and Tarapur in 2013 and the tenders were recently invited and the GGCL bagged the contract,which would amount to Rs 1, 207 crore  and will also cover Talasari, Dahanu, Palghar,Bhiwandi, Murbad,Shahpur, Kalyan,Jawhar, Mokhada and other areas. The pipeline project would be in phases, with Vasai and Virar chosen in the first phase,said Ajiv Patil, convenor, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) which rules the VVMC.

  The gas would also be used by small and medium industrial units in the twin cities of Vasai and Virar and we expect more industries to  be set up in our area, as well as auto CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) said Pravina Thakur, Mayor, VVMC. By January 2019, we can expect the gas pipeline in each household and we hope the GGCL will expedite the project,she said.Currently, local residents of the twin cities are dependent on LPG cylinder that are always in short supply when compared to the demand,said Patil. The piped gas will benefit around 12 lakh families and more than 50,000 auto rickshaw driver,said Kshitij Thakur, MLA from Nalla Sopara. Navi Mumbai, parts of Mira and Bhayander, and Mumbai have already PNG connections, and now it is the turn of Vasai and Virar to have piped gas,and the same will  spread to Palghar and other mofussil areas in the district,said Thakur.After compeitive bidding by the PNGRGB, the GGCL bagged the contract for piped gas in Vasai and Virar, said Thakur.
