Mumbai: Two unidentified hawkers were mowed to death by the 12936 Up Surat Bandra Inter City Express at Palghar at around 1840 hours on Thursday.
The hawkers were waiting at a crossing - 89/33 km milestone - where the 19217 Down Saurashtra Jamnagar Express was to be put on a siding platform number 3 as per the hawkers' presumed. The plan was when the Down train slowed down to change over to the siding platform the hawkers were to board the General coach fast so as to sell their food products but the plan went awry as the Saurashtra Janta express was scheduled to halt at Platform 1. So the hawkers who were sitting on the tracks of Platform 2 were caught unawares and within seconds the Surat Bandra intercity express sped past killing the duo. The victims were waiting for the Saurashtra Janta express train just 1000 m away from the Palghar platform so that they could board the train when it slowed down to change to a siding platform 3 at Palghar but instead the Saurashtra Janta express proceeded ahead to halt at its scheduled Platform 1 said sources.
We have sent the 2 bodies for post mortem and are awaiting its report and as of now the bodies are unidentified said PI Pramod Babar of Palghar GRP who have registered a case of accidental death.
