MUMBAI : Two persons have been arrested by the Tulinj police for extorting Rs 10,000 from a builder by posing as a fake police officer and reporter on Saturday night. When produced before the Vasai court on Sunday, both have been remanded in police custody.
The accused,Mayur Jadhav (35) a resident of Nalla Sopara and is an estate agent, and posed as a police official, while the other accused, Rupesh Gupta (36) worked as a security guard, and posed as a reporter of a Hindi weekly, and both went to a construction site in Tulinj and started to take photographs of the under construction structure, when the supervisor,Santosh Gupta (30), questioned the duo and the latter said the building was illegal and they would complain to the Vasai civic body and the supervisor called his boss, who in turn decided to meet Jadhav and Rupesh Gupta at his office. Meantime, the builder called PSI Surendra Shivde of Tulinj police station and narratted the incident and the police laid a trap. The duo at the builder's office demanded Rs 1 lakh so as not to take complain to the Vasai civic body and the boss decided to pay Rs 10,000 as the first instalment andn while the duo were accepting the money, the police swung into action and nabbed them.
We arrested the duo under extortion, and cheating of the IPC on Saturday night and when produced before the Vasai court, both have been remanded in police custody, said PSI Shivde. We will interrogate the duo of their involvement in similar crimes, said the official and have called the public to come forward to lodge complaints if they had fell victims to the crime by the duo.
