2 WAGONS OF GOODS TRAIN CONTAINING PLASTIC GRANULES CATCH FIRE IN DAHANU, WR TRAFFIC RESUMES AFTER 11 HOURS!

MUMBAI : The WR restored traffic between Mumbai and Ahmedabad nearly 11 hours after two wagons of a CONRAJ goods train containing plastic granules caught fire after the Over Head Equipment (OHE) cable snapped and fell on the moving goods train on Thursday late night. Fortunately, Friday was a holiday due to the Bhau-Beej festival, but the commuters were thrown into hardship due to the mishap and were stranded at various stations between Dahanu and Virar. A probe is being ordered by the WR to ascertain the cause of the OHE snapping,while the goods train was in motion. 

The mishap occurred at around 2235 hours on Thursday night and at around 0850 hours on Friday, the WR traffic resumed in both Up and Down sections, though delayed and with speed restrictions. The  WR maintenance staff worked all through the night to remove the two charred wagons and also to repair the Over Head Equipment(OHE) cables said a WR official at Palghar. The General Manager, WR, A K Gupta was present  at the spot throughout  Thursday night to supervise the speedy restoration work. Nearly ten long distance trains were delayed or halted at various stations as the power supply was shut off,due to the accident. 

 

All traffic towards Mumbai and Ahmedabad was halted as the power supply was  turned off.Police Inspector Mahendra Singh of RPF,Dahanu said the 22nd and  23rd  wagons caught fire after the overhead wire snapped and fell on the moving train near Km milestone 115/19. The WR immediately turned off the power supply and halted both Up and Down traffic said PI Singh. The fire was caused due to sparks from the overhead wire as it carries around 25000 V current and huge balls of fire was seen, he said. The goods train containing plastic granules was proceeding from Surat towards JNPT,Uran, in Raigad district and the incident occurred 6 kms from Vangaon station said PI Singh. Fire Brigade  and WR personnel rushed to the  spot  but due to the muddy condition, the Fire Brigade personnel had to make alternative route to reach the accident spot, and at around 0200 hours on Friday, the blaze was brought under control and the maintenance staff got to work to restore the OHE cable and other allied  issues. An Accident Relief Train (ATF) was rushed alongwith two diesel locos from Valsad and Virar for the restoration work, while the two charred wagons were detached and is currently stationed at the Goods Yard at Dahanu railhead. Due to the heat from the blaze, the OHE cable completely melted down, said the WR official. 

Some of the Mumbai bound trains cancelled or short terminated are Ahmedabad Passenger,Dahanu-Andheri local,Valsad Mumbai Passenger,Surat-Mumbai Flying Ranee,Dahanu Panvel and Boisar Diva shuttle while in the Down section Virar-Dahanu shuttle,Mumbai-Ahmedabad Passenger,Mumbai Surat Flying Ranee and Mumbai Valsad Passenger,Churchgate-Dahanu local.
