MUMBAI : Three women beggars disrobed in public to avoid being handed over to the police, after they were caught redhanded by the locals in Virar. However locals chased the trio and nabbed them and the Virar police arrested them.
On Wednesday morning at around 0640 hours,a social activist Manish Raut saw the three women beggars loitering around in a suspicious manner in Vavtewadi,Virar (East). Raut said he had seen on CCTV images of the same women stealing materials from unguarded houses in Virar and we had tipped off the locals in the area and told them to keep an eye on the women robbers said Raut.
On Wednesday we caught them in the act and chased them but while fleeing the women started to disrobe in public so as to avoid being caught but some of our women members surrounded them and prevented them to flee and we informed the Virar police who reached the spot.
Said a Virar police official we arrested the three women for attempted theft and they gave us fake names and addresses. The women had come from Andhra Pradesh and other Southern States in February with an aim to rob houses said the official. They had already stolen some goods from a few shops in the early hours when there would be a few customers and we will register complaints of theft if the victims approach us said the official. The three women accused are lodged in the women's lockup at Virar after they were remanded in police custody by the Vasai court.
