Cracking the whip against the sand mafia in Palghar district,the Saphale and Virar police seized a total 48 sand laden trucks worth Rs 4.70 crore for illegal sand mining on early Saturday morning. Ten persons including the drivers and the truck owners have been arrested by Saphale police while the Virar police have seizes the trucks but around 100 accused are likely to be arrested. The accused will be produced before the Palghar court on Sunday.
In the first instance, Gaurav Singh,SP,Palghar saw 43 trucks parked on one side of the road and majority of the number plates were covered with muck,dirt to hoodwink the police and all the trucks were carrying illegally mined sands on 7 Sept evening near Khanivade bunder and Umbarpada areas. Drivers of seven trucks on sighting the police absconded from the spot said Singh. The total sand seized and vehicles is in the range of Rs 4.50 cr and we will be arresting more than 100 accused for illegal sand mining said Singh.
In the second instance,we received a tipoff about the truck movement carrying sand and we laid in wait at around 0300 hours,between Giralenaka and Navje naka in Varai,off the Mumbai Ahmedabad National Highway 8 said API Sunil Jadhav of Saphale police station.
We halted the drivers to check the documents and none of them had the royalty permits (taxes) issued by the State government to extract sand. We arrested the 10 accused under Section 379(theft) of the IPC and Maharashtra Land Revenue Code,1966 said the official. We will be producing the accused before the Palghar court on Sunday he said.
Plundering natural resources by illegal sand mining continues unabated in Ghodbunder creek in Thane district,Vasai-Virar belt and other creek areas in Palghar district.
