CRIMINAL STABS COP, SHOT DEAD IN ENCOUNTER

MUMBAI : A dreaded history sheeter was shot dead by an armed cop in an encounter  after the victim stabbed the cop with a knife in Nalla Sopara on Monday afternoon. Two of his aides absconded while the cop is admitted in a Tulinj civic hospital. 

Govind Rana the history sheeter resided in Vishnu Darshan Apartments,Radha Nagar,Nalla Sopara E. Two cops-Mangesh Chavan and Manoj Sakpal- had gone to arrest Rana for a crime and he resisted arrest. Rana and his two aides were present and on seeing the cops, the trio tried to escape and in the melee,Rana using a knife stabbed Chavan in the stomach area and despite being injured Chavan using his service revolver shot at Rana in self defence said an official of the Local Crime Branch(LCB) Vasai. We rushed both Rana and Chavan to hospital but Rana was declared dead before admission while Chavan is being treated for the injuries said the official.

Rana has several criminal cases in Worli,Mumbai and Palghar police district including a case under Arms Act in 2014 before the Kandivli police station and other stations.

This is the first encounter case in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region(MMR) area and the last encounter was in  October 2010 where Chembur police shot dead an extortionist Mangesh Narkar. On 7 February 2016 the Gurugram police of Haryana had shot dead a criminal Sandeep Gadholi in Andheri.
