DAHANU TRIBAL CHRISTIANS LIVE IN FEAR AFTER MOB VANDALISE CENTRE
A mob on Sunday vandalized property, where tribal Christians were praying at a tribal's house which was converted into a community centre for the prayers in Ganjad village in Dahanu. The mob also broke the window panes, doors and also destroyed some musical instruments in the fracas. The Chrisitians were forced to spend the Sunday night on the outskirts of the village, in the jungles, fearing a relapse of the attack. The Dahanu police have tightened security in the village though no complaint have been registered against the mob.
Barkya Morga, a resident of the village, who had organised the prayer session in his house, alongwith people from around 350 plus households in the village, we were conducting the Sunday prayers when the mob attacked us. I converted to Christianity a decade ago, so are the scores of the people living in my village, said Morga. The mob also chased us out of Ganjad village in the night and we took shelter in the jungle, on the outskirts fearing the relapse of the attack, braving the winter chill, he said. I have complained to the Dahanu police to this effect, but no complaint has been registered, he said. Though two constables were posted at the house where the prayers were being conducted, but the police left the spot at around 1300 hours after the prayers concluded, and then the mob attacked us, as there was no police presence, said Morga. I have identified the mobsters - Raju Soman, Sanju Soman, Damodar Gorakna, Yashwant Gorakna, Veni Chumble, his wife Sheela - and others and have reported the same to the Dahanu police, said Morga.
The furious mob entered my house and broke the doors, windows, and also took away the donation box kept for religious purposes, said Morga. We informed the Dahanu police about the attack also,he said. We hid in the jungles, and only on Wednesday, after the Dahanu police escorted us, we returned to our homes said Morga.
Confirming the incident, Yogesh Chavan, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Palghar said we have stepped up the security in the said village post the clash between the two groups and are investigating and would register a FIR shortly against the unruly mob.
