Mumbai: In a cowardly incident, two drug addicts set fire the flat of a Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Corporator on Saturday dawn, and as a result the front door and other wooden furniture were destroyed while his two daughters were fast asleep in the flat. The duo also bolted the door from the outside, while the Corporator and his wife were away attending a funeral in Ratnagiri. The Naya Nagar police have registered a case against unknown persons and have also seized the CCTV footage from the site where the two addicts were caught on camera.
Zubair Inamdar (49) a Congress Corportor of the MBMC from Ward 22 on Friday, had gone to attend a relative's funeral in Ratnagiri with his wife, leaving his two adults in his first floor flat in Mira Smriti, Naya Nagar. Citing the chance, the two drug addicts on Saturday dawn at around 0325 hours, arrived his flat and using a rag laced with petrol set alight the front door of Inamdar's flat by first bolting the door from the outside while his two daughters were fast asleep.
Neighbours realising the smoke doused the fire and unbolted the door and released the two daughters, and called Inamdar who rushed by Saturday afternoon. My eldest daughter is a lawyer by profession, while the younger daugher is a MBA and working in a Mumbai based firm, said Inamdar.Said Inamdar, since the past two months, I have been taking campaigns against drug addiction by educating the locals in Naya Nagar about the ills of drug addiction, which has invited the ire of the drug suppliers whose business have dropped due to the campaign in association with the Naya Nagar police. We are into educating the addicts in rehabalitation, cure and other awareness programmes, which faced ire from the drug suppliers,said Inamdar.

Due to the fire, the main wooden door, cabinet, footwear were destroyed,said Inamdar and I approached the Naya Nagar police station, he said.Said PI Balaji Pendhare of Naya Nagar police station, we have registered a case under Section 307(attempt to murder), 436 (Mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house,), 440 (Mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt), 442 (house trespass) of the IPC and have seized the CCTV footage where two unidentified persons are clearly seen involved in the act,said the official. We will arrest the duo within 24 hours, assured the police. It is clear that the accused had used a rag laced with petrol and with a lighter set alight the front door of the victim and are investigating further,said PI Pendhare.
