First case registered under Disabilities Act in Vasai by polio struck woman commuter, 3 held

40 year old woman afflicted with polio has filed a case under the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (RPWD) Act,2016 with the Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) on Saturday. Three persons, including two women and a man have been arrested by the Vasai GRP. The accused were blocking the exit of the disabled coach in which the victim was to disboard at Nalla Sopara on Friday late evening. The victim had to get down at Virar as the trio blocked the exit door.
Fatima Rajan Dsouza (40,pictured) works as a manager with a sports club in Sion and stays in Nalla Sopara (E). As per routine, Fatima had boarded the  1836 hours Churchgate-Virar local from Bandra in the disabled reserved coach. The coach was crowded due to the evening peak hour rush but she had found a seat as she was a regular commuter. When the local reached Vasai, Chandrakant Solanki (64), his wife, Sharda (60) and one Nita Solanki (35) boarded the coach and blocked the exit, said Fatima in her complaint. When she stood up to get down at Nalla Sopara, I told the trio to give me way as I had to get down, but Chandrakant started to argue with me, and the two women supported him and in the melee, Chandrakant raised his hand and was about to slap me, but I resisted and in the rush, I was not allowed to get down at Nalla Sopara, as the train started to move and finally I got down at platform 3 at Virar, said Fatima. Citing a GRP cop, she narratted her ordeal and he advised me to lodge a complaint with the GRP, Vasai. As it was late, I registered the complaint on Saturday, said Fatima.
Said a Vasai GRP official, we have registered a complaint under the RPWD Act,2016 and arrested the trio and are in judicial custody remand, when produced before the Vasai court on Saturday. This is the first recorded case under by the WR under the RPWD Act,he said, wherein any person with disabilities can file a case  who have insulted, intimidated, or assaulted the disabled can land the accused in jail, said the official.
