The messages received by Vasai based customers about the fraudulent transactions done from various Haryana ATM centres.
Mumbai: Around 30 customers of a reputed private bank (HDFC) in Vasai have lost around Rs 10 lakh through card cloning. The Manickpur police have registered case of cheating against unknown persons. The customers received SMS alerts about bank withdrawals, when they had their ATM card with them, and all transactions were done from Gurugram, near New Delhi.
From Wednesday midnight to Thursday dawn, the customers received the SMS alerts wherein some reported of cash withdrawals of a minimum Rs 30,000 to a maximum Rs 1 lakh even though the victims had their ATM cards in their possession, said PI Anil Patil of Manickpur police station.
Said Donald Gonsalves, who works with a private airliner, he received a SMS alert of a cash withdrawal of Rs 1 lakh from an ATM at Manesar in Gurugram even though he had his ATM Card with him and he rushed to the Manickpur police station, where already 25 persons were in the process of filing a FIR with the police, who were also cheated in the similar way. Another victim,Nitin Rathod a manager with a Mumbai firm has lost Rs 25,000 due to the fraud and he is also one of the complainant.
The figure is going to rise and more people would be coming forward to register the complaint and we have registered case under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC and Sections 66(a) (d) of the Information Technology Act,2000 said PI Patil. The transactions have been done from ATMs at Bhadurgarh, Kamruddin Nagar,Manesar and other areas in Haryana,said PI Patil. We believe that card cloning was done to withdraw money and we have asked for the CCTV footage from the Haryana ATM centres from where the cash was withdrawn,said police.
Said Swati Potdar, a victim, who lost Rs 25000 to the ATM fraud, is this the price we are paying for going digital. Interesstingly,majority of the victims are account holders of the same HDFC bank,near the Gurudwara in Vasai (W) said police.
