WHEN A COP, LOCALS RESCUE AN HOUR OLD GIRL WHO WAS FOUND ON A GARBAGE HEAP

MUMBAI : Two locals and a lady cop came to the rescue of an hour old baby girl who was abandoned by her biological mother on a garbage heap in Palghar on Monday late night. The baby girl is now admitted in the Neo Natal ICU (NNICU) of a private hospital and is responding to treatment.

On Monday night, Sanjay Meher and Kundan Churi both residents of Vadrai a coastal village in Palghar were returning home after work when they found a crowd surrounding a garbage dump near Bhendipada in Vadrai.

On impulse they too went to the spot and found the baby girl amongst the garbage heap.  Said Churi, the baby girl was covered with muck and gutter water as the dump is located near a drain. I immediately took off my shirt and cleaned the baby of the dirt and wrapped it in my shirt. The baby was breathing and crying profusely as she was obviously needed nourishment said Churi.

The duo then took the baby girl to the Mahim PHC(not Mumbai) where she was admitted. However Dr Kalpana Mavchi the doctor on duty said the baby needs immediate paediatric treatment and suggested the duo to admit her in the Dr Dhawale Charitable Hospital at Palghar. Just then API Siddhawa Jayabhave of Kelwe Coastal police station was informed about the incident by the medico. I rushed to the hospital and the doctor told me that the baby girl needs emergency treatment so I also accompanied Churi and Meher to the Palghar hospital said the police official. At the Palghar hospital the authorities wantee to ask as to who will take the responsiblity of the child as she was abandoned. To this the police official readily signed the consent form and also agreed to bear the entire medical cost of the girl's treatment out of humanity.

Even before  the procedures started the baby was admitted in the NNICU and Dr Amar Tupkar a consulting paediatrician started the treatment and when he came to know about the case he informed the hospital management that he will not charge his consulting fees said the official.

The surgeons removed the half cut umblical cord which was stuck to the stomach area and is now responding to treatment said a doctor.

The Satpati Coastal police have registered a case under Section 317(abandonment of child) of the IPC against the unidentified mother said API Mansinh Patil of Satpati police station. It seems that the mother had just delivered the child which could be out of wedlock and dumped the baby on the garbage heap he said. We are taking the help of "dais" (women trained to deliver babies) and anganwadi workers as they know the locality and also of any pregnancy cases amongst the women residing in the above area and we have also announced a cash reward to any person giving us any information on the case said the police official. Even we are checking the government and private maternity hospitals of any fresh deliveries he said. The baby is still in the hospital and after seeking the Palghar court permission the baby would be handed over to a government child care home he said and are probing further.
